SCOTT TAIT: MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SAVAGE RAPE AND ATTEMPTED MURDER
SEX BEAST Scott Tait, who raped a teenage girl seven times before burying her alive, was sentenced to 10 years in jail yesterday. The 6ft 4in rapist dumped the unconscious 16-year-old in a shallow grave after the three-hour attack.
A police surgeon who examined the girl afterward described it as the worst case of rape he had seen.
The teenage girl later told police: "All the time he was threatening he was going to kill me.
I was terrified." The 10-year sentence faced attack from incensed women's groups last night who said Tait, 21, should have received a life sentence.
Lesley Irving of Scottish Woman's Aid stated: "A judge can hand out a life sentence for one rape yet this was repeated rape." Tait admitted the attack immediately when caught and astonishingly asked police for the Rangers' score.
The High Court in Edinburgh was told that the girl had been at a dance in Tranent, East Lothian, and left alone after an argument with a relative.
Tait, who was also at the dance, grabbed her around the neck and punched her in the face as she walked home.
Lord Hardie, the Lord Advocate, stated that Tait then dragged the girl into woods and repeatedly raped her.
She told police: "I thought I was going to die.
I had to do what he said because I didn't know what he would have done." The girl explained: "I couldn't move and I was terrified he was still around." Tait, from Musselburgh, East Lothian, confessed when caught.
Lord Hardie added: "Rather bizarrely, at the end of the interview he asked if the police officers knew what the Rangers score had been that day." Tait admitted repeatedly raping the girl on August 21 of that year, with a charge of attempted murder dropped.
Judge Lord Milligan indicated that a first-time rapist might expect six years in prison, but he considered the extent of violence and abuse warrant a much longer sentence.
Sir, the sentence reflects the gravity of the offense, and Tait's actions have led to significant trauma for the victim.
