GLENROTHES MAN JAILED FOR POSSESSING "EXTREME" INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN AND TERROR OFFENCES
Sam Imrie, aged 24, was convicted of multiple criminal offences including terrorism-related charges and hate crimes. He was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for terror offences, which involved spreading hate and glorifying terrorists such as Anders Brevik who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011.
During the court proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow, Lord Mulholland described Imrie's conduct as 'despicable' and accused him of spreading hate and encouraging terrorist actions he pretended to undertake himself.
Imrie was arrested in July 2019 after posting messages on social media indicating he planned to set fire to the Fife Islamic Centre.
Evidence from police investigations revealed that he had been 'glorifying' murderers online and possessed an arsenal of weapons, including knives, a hammer, nunchucks, an axe, and a rifle scope.
He also posted images and footage, including recordings of himself setting fire to the doorway of an abandoned building in Thornton and filming himself setting fire to a headstone at a cemetery in Markinch, prior to the Islamic Centre incident.
Although he was acquitted of a terrorism charge related to preparation for terrorist acts, he was convicted of making statements on Telegram and Facebook encouraging acts of terrorism and making a record of information that could aid terrorists.
During sentencing, Jennifer Harrower, the prosecutor, described Imrie's posts as 'wholly unacceptable' and emphasized the ongoing efforts of the Crown Office along with partner agencies to bring terrorists to justice.
Police Scotland's head of organized crime and counter-terrorism, Det Ch Supt Stuart Houston, stated that Imrie posed 'a significant threat' to society, as his online activities could inspire others elsewhere to carry out attacks.
Authorities warn the public that online extremism, especially among socially isolated individuals, can lead to real-world violence, and they urge anyone concerned about individuals displaying such behavior to report to authorities.
