SHERIFF SAYS FIFE PERVERT REMAINS ‘CONSIDERABLE’ DANGER TO WOMEN
A sheriff emphasized that a man from Fife remains a “considerable” threat to women, prompting her to sentence him to prison as a warning to others with similar intentions.Jon Michie, a known sex offender, engaged in downloading and sharing videos of child sexual abuse that were described as being of the “most depraved and vile” kind.
He received a sentence of 16 months behind bars, with an additional eight months to be served in the community under supervision for rehabilitation.
Michie’s mobile device contained over 600 disturbing files, including 51 photographs and 149 videos, predominantly depicting girls from newborn babies up to 14 years old, classified as Category A material.
The total duration of the recorded footage was nearly four hours.
Sheriff Krista Johnston addressed him directly, stating: “These images featured children from infancy, including babies, up to puberty; they were of a most depraved and vile nature, and involved acts of penetration.” She further remarked, “You acknowledge having an obsession and a clearly sexually deviant interest in acquiring these images.” A social work assessment classified Michie as posing a medium risk of reoffending.
The sheriff expressed concern about the significant danger he posed to women and society, noting his continued procurement of such images over time despite knowing it was wrong.
She criticized him for not considering the pain and harm inflicted on victims, emphasizing that the volume of images, their young ages, and his distribution of the material all worsened his culpability.
The court was informed that Michie shared 23 videos of child sexual abuse, 15 of which fell into the highest Category A classification.
He conversed with others via a messaging app, revealing his obsession with “no limits” material and his wish to find a “degenerate” accomplice.
His offences were uncovered after police conducted a raid on his home on February 24 last year, following reports of illegal images being uploaded from there.
During police interviews, Michie admitted to downloading the content, claiming he was not attracted to children but had a longstanding addiction to pornography, which had grown into seeking out illegal material for the thrill.
Residing in Glenrothes, Michie appeared in court to be sentenced after previously admitting to two charges.
Between August 15, 2021, and February 24, 2025, he created indecent images of children, and between February 14 and February 20 last year, he distributed such images.
Regarding the sentence, Sheriff Johnston sentenced Michie to 16 months in prison—reduced from an original 24 months due to his early guilty plea—and imposed an eight-month period of supervised release in the community aimed at rehabilitation.
“During this time, responsible authorities will work with you in an attempt to rehabilitate you,” she explained.
Furthermore, Michie was registered as a sex offender for a decade.
His defense attorney, Iain McCafferty, argued for a non-custodial sentence, emphasizing that the public's interest could be better served if the court focused on addressing Michie’s offending behavior through intensive programs now.
He highlighted Michie’s cooperation with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation as evidence of his willingness to confront his issues.
The lawyer also noted that Michie was a first-time offender, having committed the crimes between the ages of 17 and 21.
Finally, he cited the social work report, which pointed to a “difficult upbringing” and childhood experiences that may have influenced his actions.
