CHARITY WORKER JAILED FOR RAPE OF DRUNKEN WOMAN IN NOTTINGHAM
A charity worker has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of raping a drunken woman who was unaware of the assault. The victim had been in a Nottingham house when the incident occurred last year, and a Nottingham Crown Court judge, John Burgess, was informed that another woman in the same house overheard the assault.
This woman described the victim as 'extremely distressed.' Salah Kamal, aged 21 and residing on Sneinton Boulevard, was found guilty of rape by a jury after a trial and was sentenced on Friday, March 23.
Judge Burgess ordered Kamal to register as a sex offender for life, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime: 'Anybody who commits an offence of rape has to go to prison.
It is a very serious matter.' Kamal's solicitor, Adrian Reynolds, stated that Kamal did not accept guilt and expressed that Kamal was uncomfortable with his level of intoxication during the incident.
Reynolds highlighted Kamal’s background, mentioning he left his family in Italy due to economic hardship, working in a food factory on minimum wage while also helping a charity for Palestinian refugees.
Kamal was described as having no prior convictions and was clearly affected by the verdict, although he was considered unlikely to reoffend.
The judge acknowledged the jury's possible reasoning that Kamal believed the woman was incapable of consent but emphasized that such a belief was unreasonable.
