MAN HELD A SAMURAI SWORD TO HIS WIFE'S LIPS AND NECK AND TOLD HER: "YOU'RE NOT EVEN GOOD ENOUGH FOR IT, I'D RATHER KILL YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS"
An incident involving a violent husband who threatened his wife with a samurai sword was detailed in court proceedings. The husband, Ryan Yanez, 42, displayed extreme aggression after becoming suspicious and accusing his wife of infidelity.
He held the sword to her lips and throat, making threatening remarks such as "You're not even good enough for it, I'd rather kill you with my bare hands".
On August 26, Yanez assaulted his wife after retrieving her phone to examine her messages following a text she received from someone else.
He pulled her from the sofa by her arms and throat and struck her on the nose, which was reported to be bleeding and pushed to the right side during the assault.
According to the prosecution at Cardiff Crown Court, Yanez then took a samurai sword from a shelf and placed its sharp tip against his wife’s lips, causing her to fear injury if she spoke.
His threatening words continued as he warned her of her worthlessness and his intent to harm her.
Later that day, at a friend’s house, Yanez accused the woman of infidelity again.
When she refused to hand over her phone, he forcibly grabbed her arm, resulting in a bruise, and subsequently ejected her from their home while locking the door behind her.
During this episode, he left her in the street with only one shoe.
Yanez thereafter left the house with the sword concealed in his shorts, behaving in a highly agitated manner as he ranted about his wife’s fidelity.
He wandered the streets for a couple of hours before returning home, and later, climbed onto his roof from a window until rescue personnel brought him down.
During police questioning, he denied initiating violence, claiming his wife was the aggressor.
Yanez, from Blaenau'r Cwm, Penyard, Merthyr Tydfil, pleaded guilty to charges including threatening with an offensive weapon, possessing one in public, and two counts of assault.
He has a criminal record with nine prior convictions for possessing bladed weapons and criminal damage.
In court, legal counsel Hywel Davies highlighted that Yanez was no longer using drugs and presented the relationship as unhealthy.
He mentioned that his client had children from previous relationships, wished to play a more active role post-release, and support his mother with dementia.
Judge Paul Hobson sentenced Yanez to 30 months in prison and imposed a restraining order lasting ten years, emphasising that jealousy was a central factor in the violence towards his wife.
