ROGER WAKEFIELD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN MILFORD HAVEN AND SKWEEN
In January 2014, a man named Roger Wakefield was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl. The incident took place while Wakefield was residing in Milford Haven, a coastal town known for its maritime history, but he had since relocated to Skewen, a village near Swansea.Wakefield, aged 43 at the time, appeared before Judge Paul Thomas at Swansea Crown Court to face sentencing. He had previously admitted to the charges, which involved the sexual assault of a young girl, and his guilty plea was entered during the court proceedings. The court was informed that at the time of the offense, Wakefield was living in a property on Cutty Sark Drive in Milford Haven. However, he had recently moved to Skewen, which is situated near Swansea, indicating a change of residence after the incident.
Prosecutor Geraint Walters detailed the case, revealing that Wakefield had confided in an adult friend about his actions. Despite this confession, Wakefield initially denied any involvement when questioned by police. It was only during the court hearing that he formally pleaded guilty to the charges. The police investigation uncovered additional concerning details; during his arrest on unrelated allegations, officers found Wakefield in possession of a lockknife with a four-inch blade. This led to a charge of possessing a bladed article in a public place, which Wakefield also admitted to.
Representing Wakefield, barrister Stephen Rees, highlighted that his client had a history of being sexually abused himself at the age of 14. This personal history was presented as a factor in understanding Wakefield’s actions, although it did not mitigate the seriousness of his offense. Judge Thomas remarked that Wakefield’s own experiences of abuse should have made him more aware of the psychological harm his actions could inflict on the young girl. The judge emphasized the gravity of the crime and the impact it would have on the victim.
As part of his sentence, Wakefield was ordered to register as a sex offender with the police and will remain on this register until further notice. The case underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding sexual offenses and the importance of accountability for such serious crimes in communities like Milford Haven and Skewen.
