NORTHAMPTON MAN, 29, JAILED FOR 'VENGEFUL' ATTACK ON BABY
A 29-year-old man named Radoslaw Zurek was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison for a 'vengeful' attack on a nine-month-old infant in Northampton.Authorities responded to a distress call at a flat on Victoria Road, where both Zurek and the baby were found with serious injuries.
The infant exhibited injuries consistent with strangulation, such as facial bruising and petechiae marks.
An investigation indicated that Zurek believed he had caused the child's death and that he subsequently attempted to take his own life.
Paramedics found Zurek with severe self-inflicted wounds and the injured baby covered with a blanket.
Medical examination confirmed signs of strangulation that could lead to unconsciousness within 10 seconds and death within minutes.
Zurek faced charges of attempted murder but remained silent during his police interview and refused to testify at the trial in July.
He later appeared in court in October, where he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Judge Robert Mayo stated that Zurek’s mental health issues did not exempt him from responsibility, noting, "You still bear a degree of responsibility for your decision to kill [the baby] by strangulation." The court was told Zurek had no prior convictions but was described by his attorney as experiencing a depressive episode, described as an 'aberration.' The medical evidence highlighted that the neck injury could have caused the infant to lose consciousness rapidly and die shortly thereafter.
Both police and the court emphasized that, regardless of his mental state, Zurek made a conscious decision to commit the act and was held accountable in court.
