MAN JAILED FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A 60-year-old man has received a 15-year prison sentence after being convicted of abusing a child over an 11-year span.Previously residing in Northampton, Melvyn Peter Brown began grooming the young girl at the age of five, with the abusive acts continuing until she was 16.
The victim was around 10 years old at the time of her first rape by Brown.
The case was brought to police attention at the end of the previous year, resulting in an investigation, Brown’s arrest, and formal charges.
A trial was held in May at Northampton Crown Court, during which Brown admitted to seven charges.
These included two counts of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13-15, two counts of indecent assault against a girl under 14 during the proceedings, two counts of touching a girl under 13 to commit assault, and one count of encouraging or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual acts.
Following a four-hour jury deliberation, the court found Brown guilty of additional charges: three counts of indecent assault, one count of sexual penetration of a girl under 13, one of sexual activity with a girl aged 13-15, two counts of sexual assault against a girl under 13, one of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and one of sexual activity while a child under 16 watched.
Brown reappeared in court on January 5, where he was handed a 15-year imprisonment term for his total of 16 offences.
