OWEN RUTHERFORD
While celebrating a 60th birthday, members of the Hain family decided to visit Kielder Forest for a walk.
Their plans were shattered when they were involved in a crash caused by a driver speeding on the A68.
Owen Rutherford, 25 years old from Ridsdale, was overtaking aggressively on a dangerous segment of road, reaching speeds of no less than 85mph.
He overtook other vehicles over a blind summit and collided with a car driven by David Hain just as he was pulling out.
The collision resulted in the death of Mr Hain, age 69.
His daughter, Megan, aged 25, was left with severe brain injuries and is now unable to communicate, residing in a care home in Whitley Bay.
His wife, Phillipa, and another person sustained serious injuries, and the family dog, Millie, was killed in the incident.
Rutherford, who lives in Ridsdale, pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injuries through dangerous driving.
As a result, he was sentenced to over eleven years in prison.
