A harrowing account has emerged from a survivor who endured years of relentless emotional and physical abuse at the hands of Owen Matthew in Dundee. The victim, whose identity remains protected, described a prolonged period of torment that spanned over four years, during which they were systematically broken down by a controlling and violent partner.

From the outset, Owen Matthew isolated the victim from friends and family, subjecting them to degrading insults such as “ugly,” “fat,” and “useless.” These words were part of a calculated effort to diminish their self-esteem and sense of worth. The victim was repeatedly told that no one would care if they disappeared, a cruel tactic to foster feelings of hopelessness and dependency.

The situation worsened significantly following the birth of their child. The abuse escalated into frequent acts of violence, with Matthew becoming sexually aggressive and dismissive of consent. The victim endured numerous assaults, including being choked, slapped, punched, and kicked — often in front of their young child. One particularly terrifying incident involved the victim being held down on a sofa, strangled, and repeatedly slammed against the back of the sofa until they suffered a concussion. This assault was triggered by the victim merely asking Owen Matthew to spend time with them and their child.

Gaming sessions appeared to be a common trigger for violence. Many of the assaults occurred when the victim interrupted Owen Matthew while he played video games. The physical attacks left lasting scars, including chronic migraines and trauma that continue to affect the victim to this day.

The abuse extended beyond the victim to their child. Owen Matthew was reported to throw the toddler around, shout in their face, and call them “stupid.” In one particularly frightening episode, the victim attempted to escape with their child after a violent outburst. Without shoes or a coat, they tried to leave the house, but Owen Matthew grabbed the victim by the hair while they were holding their child. Both were forcibly shoved into a wall, and during the struggle, the victim’s fingers were nearly broken as they tried to call the police. The abuser then choked the victim unconscious while their child screamed nearby, witnessing the violence.

The final and most violent incident occurred after the victim discovered that Owen Matthew was cheating on them with a 19-year-old who was now pregnant. As the victim attempted to confront him and throw him out of the house, Owen Matthew retaliated with brutal force. He grabbed the victim by the neck and repeatedly slammed their head into the wall, shattering a hair clip into pieces that embedded in their scalp. Their young child entered the room and saw the assault, crying out, “Stop biting my mummy!” This shock prompted the victim to break free, grab their child, and flee downstairs. They managed to call the police, finally ending the cycle of violence.

During the emergency call, Owen Matthew continued to gaslight the victim, denying that anything had happened and attempting to steal more belongings. He then kicked the victim into a toy kitchen, further demonstrating his violent and manipulative nature.

Adding to the danger was a disturbing revelation that the victim only learned later: Owen Matthew had previously been registered as a sex offender. In 2014, he was convicted of having sex with a girl under the age of 16 and was registered on the sex offenders register for five years. This critical information was completely concealed from the victim during their relationship. Owen Matthew’s failure to disclose his criminal history deprived the victim of the ability to protect themselves and their child from someone with a documented history of predatory behavior, exposing them to significant ongoing risk.

Although speaking out about such trauma remains difficult, the survivor has chosen to do so in the hope of being heard and to prevent others from suffering similar abuse. Their story underscores the importance of awareness and vigilance in recognizing the signs of domestic violence and the hidden dangers posed by individuals with a criminal past.
