MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT OFFENCES APPEARS IN COURT
A man has appeared in court accused of multiple serious sexual offences, including rape and sexual assault.Omar Hassan Iqbal appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on 21 May 2026, where he faced allegations under Sections 18, 19 and 20 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.
The charges relate to allegations involving a woman and include offences commonly described as rape, sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault.
Under Scots law, Section 18 concerns allegations of rape.
Prosecutors must prove that sexual penetration took place without consent and without a reasonable belief that consent had been given.
Section 19 relates to sexual assault by penetration and covers allegations involving non-consensual penetration carried out with a part of the body or an object.
The offence is regarded as one of the most serious sexual crimes prosecuted by the Scottish courts.
Section 20 concerns sexual assault and can cover a wide range of alleged sexual conduct said to have occurred without the complainer’s consent.
Court papers indicate that the accused was granted bail following his appearance.
Bail conditions reportedly include restrictions preventing contact with a witness connected to the case and prohibiting entry into a specified area.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has informed those involved in the case that further investigations and evidence reviews are continuing.
Witnesses have also been advised that they may be required to give evidence should proceedings progress to trial.
The allegations against Iqbal have not been tested in court and no verdict has been reached.
