NIGEL CARLIN FROM SUNDERLAND SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN LIVERPOOL AND DUNDEE
In November 1998, Nigel Carlin, a 40-year-old man from Sunderland, was sentenced in connection with a series of disturbing child sex offences.The court heard that Carlin, residing on Blackwood Road, Town End Farm, had committed multiple heinous acts involving young children, including indecent assault and the production of indecent photographs.
His victims included an 11-year-old boy, a boy approximately seven years old, and a girl under the age of 10.
The Newcastle Crown Court was informed that Carlin’s criminal activities extended beyond local boundaries, as investigators linked him to a disturbing video recording found on Merseyside.
Authorities discovered a video depicting a young boy in a hotel bedroom in Dundee, which was traced back to Carlin.
Further inquiries revealed that Carlin had taken the recording to Liverpool, where it was subsequently copied.
This connection was crucial in establishing his involvement in the production and distribution of child exploitation material.
Prosecutor Brian Forster detailed that Carlin not only made the video but also indecently assaulted the young boy approximately ten times.
The court also learned that Carlin’s offences included assaults on an 11-year-old boy and an incident involving a girl on South Tyneside.
It was revealed that Carlin had a prior conviction for similar offences; he was sentenced to five years in prison in 1987 for indecently assaulting a boy.
Additionally, nine years before that, he had been placed on probation following another sex attack.
During police interviews, Carlin was described as being frank about his actions.
He admitted to having met another individual involved in the filming while they were both serving time in prison.
It was established that the two shared a disturbing interest in young boys.
Carlin also admitted to visiting this accomplice after the Dundee trip to show him the video recording, which was then copied and retained by the other man involved.
Defense lawyer John Evans acknowledged Carlin’s cooperation with police from the outset, emphasizing that his guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity spared the victims the trauma of giving evidence in court.
Despite this, Judge David Hodson highlighted the serious nature of Carlin’s crimes and the high risk of re-offending.
The judge emphasized that Carlin posed a substantial threat to the public, particularly to young children, and therefore, a longer-than-normal sentence was deemed necessary to protect society from further harm.
