NICHOLAS DEWAR SHAMES POOLE WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES CONVICTION

In June 2013, a security guard from Poole faced the consequences of his involvement in a disturbing case of child exploitation. Nicholas Dewar, aged 59 and residing on Inverclyde Road in Poole, was sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to the possession of approximately 4,000 indecent images of children on his personal computer.

The charges against Dewar included 21 counts of possessing indecent images, with the severity of the images ranging from lower to higher-grade offences. The case was brought before Bournemouth Crown Court, where prosecutor Sadie Rizzo detailed the circumstances leading to Dewar’s arrest. On July 21, 2011, Dorset police executed a search warrant at Dewar’s residence following information received from an online child protection agency. During the investigation, authorities uncovered computer equipment that was subsequently seized for forensic analysis.

Miss Rizzo explained that Dewar had been in contact with an individual in Australia who was already under investigation for multiple child sex offences. This connection raised further concerns about Dewar’s activities. When questioned by police, Dewar admitted to accessing illegal material and receiving emails containing indecent images since 2006, revealing a long-standing pattern of offending behavior.

During the court proceedings, Dewar’s legal representative, Robert Grey, emphasized his client’s cooperation and remorse. Grey stated that Dewar had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had fully assisted police in their investigation. He also highlighted Dewar’s previous good character and expressed that his client was deeply ashamed of his actions. Dewar, who is married, issued a personal statement in which he expressed his embarrassment and remorse, saying, “I’m very embarrassed, extremely remorseful and want to express my apologies for my behaviour.”

Prior to the sentencing, Dewar had been employed as a security officer and bar steward at a local caravan site. However, he resigned from his position due to the ongoing court proceedings. Judge Samuel Wiggs sentenced Dewar to six months in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences. The judge pointed out that the large quantity of images, especially those at higher levels of severity, warranted a stern penalty. Additionally, Dewar was subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years, underscoring the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing risk to the community.
