MAN BEAT AND STRANGLED HIS PARTNER IN YEAR OF ABUSE
A man subjected his partner to nearly a year of abuse, involving strangulation, physical assaults, and threats of stabbing.Daniel Bagwell, aged 43 and residing on Bedford Road South in Poole, told his former girlfriend, “I don’t regret hitting you, I wish I hit you harder.” During a court session at Bournemouth Crown Court, prosecutor Lucy Taylor explained that the couple had been involved in a relationship spanning from December 2023 to September 2024.
Throughout this period, the victim was assaulted periodically, with Bagwell threatening to “back hand her” during minor disagreements.
An incident on New Year’s Eve 2023 saw Bagwell accuse the woman of sharing a room with another man.
When she denied the allegation, he accused her of lying and claimed to have researched signs of dishonesty.
He responded by throwing a phone at her, resulting in a cut lip.
Between April and June 2024, Bagwell discovered a message from another man on her phone, then pinning her down on the bed.
He strangled her and physically beat her, impairing her breathing.
In subsequent disputes, he would refer back to the incident and express a desire to have strangled her longer.
Between September 13 and 15, 2024, after the woman returned from a spa visit with a friend, they engaged in drinking.
She used a covert message requesting her friend to confirm her safe return as a signal of abuse.
When Bagwell examined her phone, he wanted to discuss Snapchat, falsely claiming his sister called it “it was an app for wh**es”.
He insisted she download the app and show her messages, hitting her ribs and saying “do it.” He then struck her, and when she attempted to defend herself, he punched her in the eye, causing her to fall onto the sofa with blood streaming from her eye.
She fled the home, asked for her phone, but he refused to give it unless she returned inside.
He then threatened to stab her if she did not come back.
The woman left without her phone, her eye swollen from a fractured socket, and sought help at a nearby garage, who arranged a taxi to her mother’s house.
In a victim impact statement, she expressed feeling brainwashed and fearful of men.
“I’m scared of being assaulted again and scared of being called a wh**e if a man looks at me,” she said.
She also shared feelings of guilt, believing she caused his imprisonment, despite knowing what love truly involves.
Bagwell’s criminal record includes 22 convictions across 40 offences, such as robbery in 2005, assault in 2010, and possessing a bladed weapon in 2020.
In a letter to the court, he took responsibility for his actions and claimed to be a “model prisoner” working hard in custody.
