OBSESSIVE BOYFRIEND SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL MURDER OF STUDENT SABIRA ALAM
A 'bright and lively' beauty student named Sabira Alam, aged 20, was murdered in a jealous attack by her obsessive boyfriend Naveed Naeem. The offender, Naeem, strangled Sabira using a piece of clothing and stuffed tissue paper in her mouth to silence her screams, before tying her wrists and ankles and dumping her body behind a wall on the moor at Buckstones, near Huddersfield, where it was discovered by a dog-walker.
Following this, Naeem took her bank card and withdrew £130 to pay for sex at a brothel in Manchester.
CCTV footage shows him smirking and giving a thumbs-up as he leaves the scene.
Naeem kept a contemptible notebook with notes about Sabira, including statements like 'Always I catch her out, scanning the next man' and other observations suggesting paranoia and possessiveness.
Although Naeem denied the murder during his trial, a jury at Bradford Crown Court found him guilty in October 2009 after just 30 minutes of deliberation, with overwhelming forensic evidence linking him to the crime.
The judge, James Stewart QC, sentenced Naeem to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 20 years, describing his treatment of Sabira's body and efforts to conceal her death as serious aggravating features.
Naeem was heard shouting 'You’re b******s – all of you!' as he was taken down to the cells.
The judge remarked, 'He had snuffed out the life of a loving daughter and sister,' and highlighted that Sabira was a vibrant young woman with her whole life ahead.
Detectives also revealed that Naeem had previously lost an appeal against his 20-year sentence, with DNA evidence being 'overwhelming' in establishing his guilt.
In 2010, he was ordered to serve at least 20 years before being eligible for parole, and the case was characterized by its brutality, premeditation, and Naeem's attempt to hide the crime.
