MAN ATTACKED HIS OWN GRAN WHEN SHE REFUSED TO GIVE HIM MONEY
A man from Shildon with a history of drug abuse and violent behaviour inflicted injuries on his 75 year old grandmother after she tried to escape him.The woman, who was repeatedly harassed by Nathan Lee Jones, fled her home twice to get away from him, only to be followed and attacked at a nearby relative’s residence.
Jones, armed with a knife, threatened to harm himself and assaulted his grandmother by pushing her toward a television, punching her in the back, and striking her full force in the nose, resulting in bleeding.
In court last September, he avoided immediate imprisonment for similar conduct.
However, during a hearing on April 14, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
Prosecutor Charlie Thompson reported that on March 5 and 6, Jones persistently asked his grandmother for money.
She gave him £10 twice, once when he arrived banging at her door at 2am while she was in her dressing gown.
Later that morning, he returned demanding more money; when she refused, he disabled some appliances and insulted her.
She attempted to attract police assistance outside, but Jones escaped through a window.
On her return, she discovered damage caused by him, including a mirror in an upstairs bedroom.
A week later, Jones showed up again, acting erratically and demanding money.
She left and moved to her granddaughter’s house.
Ten minutes later, Jones appeared there covered in blood, with an eye bump, and removed his T-shirt before retrieving a knife from the kitchen.
He threatened self-harm, then pushed his grandmother and punched her, causing injuries including a black eye and a swollen nose.
He also kicked a female relative with recent stitches in the stomach.
Police soon arrested him at the scene.
The 27-year-old, residing on Ash Grove, appeared via video from Holme House Prison, where he has been remanded since his arrest.
He admitted to assault causing actual bodily harm, battery, harassment, two counts of criminal damage, and breach of a court order.
