SHILDON MAN ADMITS DOWNLOADING CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES, SHARING SOME
A man who downloaded hundreds of child sex abuse images and videos shared some with like-minded individuals, a court heard.Joseph Thompson could now be facing a prison sentence after admitting three counts each of making (downloading) and distributing indecent images of children, plus one of possessing extreme pornography.
The “making” offences relate to 307 images or videos, 166 in the most severe category, all recovered in examination of devices seized by police from the defendant in September last year.
But he was also said to have distributed 62 of them, 48 in the most serious category, to four other people online.
Peterlee Magistrates' Court heard that the devices also contained six extreme pornographic images, involving scenes of bestiality involving dogs.
James Gallagher, prosecuting, said the police went to Thompson’s home, in Spennymoor at the time, in September, following the receipt of “relevant information.” Stephen Andrews, in mitigation, told the court the defendant has, “no relevant matters recorded against him.” The magistrates sent the case to Durham Crown Court for Thompson to be sentenced on February 6, following preparation of the Probation Service report.
But the defendant, now of Fir Tree, Shildon, who was granted bail in the intervening period, will be subject of interim registration as a sex offender, with the exact length to be confirmed at the sentencing hearing.

Joseph Thompson also exchanged “vile” images of young children being sexually abused among a network of other chat group users, with some of the messaging being encrypted in a bid to conceal their true nature.
Despite his claims that in searching out the paedophilic material on the internet, he was following “voices”, reports prepared for Thompson’s sentencing hearing confirmed he does not suffer with psychosis.
The 21-year-old defendant of Fir Tree, Shildon, admitted three counts each of making and distributing indecent images of children, plus one of possession of extreme pornography.
Police went to the defendant’s home on September 11, last year, as it was suspected he had links to offences of distribution of indecent images.
Various devices, including his phone, were seized for examination.
They contained 272 indecent child images, 166 in the most serious category, many which he shared with four other users of two apps over several months last year.
Thompson revealed there was no lower age limit for the children he would like to abuse, claiming he wanted to rape a baby and cause it harm.
He stated that he wanted a cabin in the woods where he could carry out his deviant acts, which he said would be his own personal “slaughterhouse”.
Many of the images passed on by the defendant featured the abuse of children who appeared in discernible pain, with at least one potentially drugged by the abuser.
Dr Chris Wood said there was “very little” his client could say in mitigation.
The judge described his comments as "in the most extreme of vile terms".
Despite claims that he was driven by voices, the evidence proved he has a sexual interest in children.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, registered as a sex offender, and placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years.
