POOLE MAN MICHAEL SMITH ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DECADES OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DOWNLOADS

In a case that has shocked the community of Poole, Michael Smith, a 72-year-old resident of Coventry Crescent, was found guilty of possessing and downloading a vast array of indecent images of children spanning over a 20-year period.

Despite the severity of his crimes, Smith was not sent to prison but received a suspended sentence after admitting to 11 charges related to the creation and distribution of child exploitation material.

The proceedings took place at Bournemouth Crown Court, where the court was informed that the images and videos discovered on Smith’s computer were classified predominantly as Category A, indicating the most serious level of child abuse imagery.

Some of these images depicted children as young as five years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material involved.

The investigation was initiated when authorities executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence in November of the previous year.

Prosecutor Carolyn Branford-Wood detailed that the police found the illicit content stored on his computer, revealing a disturbing pattern of behavior that had persisted for approximately two decades.

Smith admitted to police that he had been downloading such indecent images of children for around 20 years, a revelation that added to the gravity of his offenses.

During the court hearing, Smith’s defense lawyer, Mark Ruffell, explained that Smith had previously been involved in coaching young people at the Bournemouth Sports Table Tennis Club.

However, upon discovery of his criminal activities, Smith resigned from his coaching position.

The court was also told that Smith’s wife, who was present in the public gallery supporting her husband, has suffered from bipolar disorder for nearly 30 years.

Mr.

Ruffell described her as having been both an emotional and physical target of Smith’s abuse, stating, “He does not seek to excuse his behaviour by her illness but it cannot be discounted.” As her mental health deteriorated, Smith’s online activity intensified, with him increasingly drawn to more extreme and younger images of children.

His lawyer acknowledged that Smith recognized he had a serious problem, stating, “Over time they got younger and younger.

He got fixated.

He admits he has got a problem.” Judge Peter Johnson, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of Smith’s actions during sentencing.

He noted that Smith had no prior convictions but had engaged in a prolonged period of criminal activity involving distressing images of children being sexually abused.

The judge remarked, “You downloaded these images over a period of time and some of those images showed distress on the children when sexual acts were done to them.

It seems to me that just under three decades you have grappled with and coped with your wife’s serious disorder.

This was the turning point in your life, which led you to turn to pornography which became more and more extreme and turned to young children.” Ultimately, Smith was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete a sex offenders rehabilitation program.

Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual offences prevention order designed to prevent any unsupervised contact with children.

Judge Johnson concluded by saying, “It seems to me, while it is a matter of fine judgement, that if anyone deserves a chance it’s you.” The case has left many in Poole contemplating the disturbing realities of online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
