MICHAEL ROBERT BROWN SUNDERLAND MAN ACCUSED OF NEW SEX ATTACKS IN NELSON AND PENNYWELL
In a case that has once again brought the spotlight onto the criminal activities of Michael Robert Brown, a man previously convicted of heinous sexual offenses in Sunderland, he now faces serious allegations of additional sexual assaults.Brown, who has a troubling history of offending, was convicted of raping two 14-year-old girls during separate incidents in 2009 and 2010, following a detailed trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
The court sentenced him to a minimum of seven years in prison, a sentence that reflects the gravity of his crimes and the need for public safety.
Despite his incarceration, new allegations have emerged, with a third woman coming forward to accuse Brown of attacking her.
This woman, whose identity remains protected, claims that Brown assaulted her in the period before 2004.
Brown, who was formerly residing in Pennywell, Sunderland, has denied the charges, which include one count of indecent assault and two counts of rape.
The alleged victim was over the age of 16 at the time of the incident, and her case is currently being examined by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.
Throughout the proceedings, Brown has maintained his innocence regarding the recent allegations, just as he did with the previous convictions.
The court has been advised to approach the case with a calm and objective mindset.
Judge Brian Forster emphasized to the jury that they must evaluate the evidence “calmly, coolly and clinically,” ensuring that their judgment remains free from emotional bias.
The importance of basing decisions solely on the facts was underscored to prevent any prejudice from influencing the verdict.
Prosecutor Ian Brook addressed the jury, cautioning them not to assume guilt merely because Brown has a history of similar offenses.
He highlighted the emotional impact on the alleged victim, who told police that Brown’s actions had “destroyed her life.” The woman was aware of Brown’s previous convictions for raping two teenage girls, which she believed would result in his imprisonment.
Her reasoning was that once Brown was behind bars, she would no longer need to disclose what had happened to her, thinking that justice would be served and her ordeal would end.
However, she found herself haunted by the trauma even after Brown’s incarceration.
Her statement to police revealed her feelings of torment and the ongoing emotional scars inflicted by the assaults.
Brown continues to deny the charges related to the alleged attack, which is believed to have taken place before 2004.
The case remains ongoing, with the jury tasked with determining his guilt or innocence based on the evidence presented in court.
