OFFENDER MICHAEL MURPHY HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR ASSAULT AND PROPERTY DAMAGE
In the dead of night, a son assaulted his mother while shouting words of hatred and was described as being 'possessed.' Following the attack, he caused significant damage to her home, pulling a toilet from the wall and creating holes and scratches across the property.Michael Murphy, aged 36 and residing in Merthyr Tydfil, had previously received a suspended prison sentence for attacking his mother.
After being ordered to vacate her residence, he continued to cause destruction, including dismantling parts of the bathroom and inflicting more damage.
The incident happened on October 14 last year at approximately 2:50 am when he awakened his mother by smashing glass.
Upon investigation, Murphy launched a violent assault, punching her and pulling her by the hair while shouting obscenities.
He was later convicted and received an 18-month jail term, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Despite the sentence, he persisted in damaging her property.
During court proceedings, the victim expressed fear for her safety and stated that her son 'needs help.' It was also disclosed that Murphy has prior convictions for criminal damage, including breaking the window of his ex-partner’s car and assaulting an emergency worker.
In his defense, the court was told that Murphy struggled with cocaine addiction and had relapsed after suffering mental health issues related to trauma.
The influence of drugs reportedly worsened his behavior, leading him to lash out at those close to him.
Record-keeper Eugene Egan characterized the assault as 'unpleasant' and described the offending as 'mean.' He sentenced Murphy to 14 months in prison.
