NOTTINGHAM RAPIST MICHAEL GIBSON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
The Nottingham rapist, Michael Gibson, aged 26, was convicted of raping a female student after a night out in March 2019.The incident took place when Gibson, who had shared a room with the victim after missing his bus home, was found to have committed sexual contact while sharing a bed with her.
The victim initially hesitated to contact the police but eventually did so five days later, after visiting Nottingham’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and collecting vital forensic evidence that confirmed sexual contact had occurred.
The victim later officially filed a criminal complaint in November 2020, supported by evidence such as clothing and messages in which Gibson apologized to her.
During the trial at Mansfield Magistrates Court, the evidence presented proved that sexual contact took place, contradicting Gibson’s denial.
The court sentenced him to six and a half years in prison.
Nottinghamshire Police Detective Sergeant Emma Steele commented on the case, highlighting the victim’s initial reluctance but also her correct decision to seek support and secure evidence at the SARC, which was crucial for the successful prosecution.
She emphasized that victims can attend the centre without involving the police immediately and that evidence can be safely stored for up to two years in case they wish to pursue charges later.
The case concludes with Gibson being jailed, and the police expressing admiration for the victim’s determination, hoping this conviction encourages others to come forward with their stories.
