Marwa Saleem received a suspended prison sentence after confessing to offences of domestic abuse against her former partner, including causing actual bodily harm through assault and deliberate strangulation.Liverpool Crown Court was informed that Saleem engaged in a recurring pattern of violence, intimidation, coercive control, and financial manipulation during their relationship.
The court heard details of her repeatedly physically attacking her partner, strangling her on multiple occasions, biting her, smashing her head against a wall, and leaving her with bruises and bite wounds.
The victim recounted living in continual fear, experiencing anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and ongoing physical discomfort as a consequence of the abuse.
She explained that the violence had permeated all aspects of her life, causing her to fear leaving her home, trust others less, and struggle to regain her confidence and independence.
Further allegations involved financial control, with Saleem allegedly depending heavily on her partner for monetary support, forcing her to pawn personal items, and leaving her both financially depleted and emotionally exhausted.
In a statement regarding the impact of the abuse, the survivor described her experience as a consistent pattern of domination, threats, and violence, revealing her fear for her life and the threats she faced if she considered reporting the incidents to police.
Saleem was sentenced to 27 months in prison, suspended for 30 months.
She is also required to complete two years of supervision and participate in up to 30 days of rehabilitative activities.
Additionally, an indefinite restraining order was issued to prevent any contact with the victim.
