WORKINGTON MAN MARTYN FLETCHER FACES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORN DOWNLOADS IN CUMBRIA
In a serious case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Workington, Cumbria, 45-year-old Martyn Fletcher has been warned he could face imprisonment after admitting to charges related to the possession of indecent images of children. The offences, which took place over a span of more than two years, specifically from January 20, 2017, to May 17 of the previous year, have brought Fletcher before Carlisle Crown Court to answer for his actions.Fletcher, who resides at Bowness Court in Workington, was found to have downloaded a total of 132 indecent images depicting children onto his HP laptop computer. The court proceedings revealed the extent of his actions and the potential consequences he faces. During the hearing, Recorder Philip Grundy emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that all sentencing options, including the possibility of a custodial sentence, remain open. The judge made it clear that Fletcher’s name would be added to the Sex Offenders’ Register, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of sexual offences.
Following his admission of guilt, Fletcher was granted bail under strict conditions. He is prohibited from having any 'unsupervised access' to children under the age of 16. Additionally, he is required to report to his local police station within the coming days to officially sign the Sex Offenders’ Register. The court scheduled his sentencing for March 11, during which further determinations regarding his punishment will be made.
During the hearing, Recorder Grundy highlighted that Fletcher’s guilty plea to two counts of possessing indecent images is a serious matter. A pre-sentence report will be prepared to assist the court in determining the appropriate sentence. The judge also acknowledged the possibility of a custodial sentence but noted that other options, including constructive measures, will be considered. The court’s focus remains on ensuring public safety and appropriate punishment for Fletcher’s actions.
It is important to understand that the Sex Offenders’ Register is a comprehensive database that records details of individuals—regardless of gender—who have been convicted, cautioned, or released from prison for sexual offences. All convicted sex offenders are legally required to register with the police within three days of their conviction. As part of the process, a police public protection team will visit Fletcher to conduct an assessment, and the length of his registration period will depend on the sentence handed down at his upcoming sentencing hearing.
