COWARDLY MAN WHO BEAT HUSKY IS BANNED FROM OWNING ANIMALS

In April 2021, a disturbing case of animal cruelty unfolded in Poole, Dorset, involving a man named Martin Thomas.

The incident came to light when witnesses reported seeing Thomas, aged 37, engaging in a brutal assault on an eight-month-old Husky puppy outside a Tesco Express store located on Bournemouth Road.

According to reports, the assault occurred around 6 pm on February 12.

Witnesses observed Thomas repeatedly punching the puppy in the head, an act of violence that caused the animal significant distress.

The distress was so severe that the puppy urinated and defecated on the pavement outside the store, highlighting the level of fear and pain inflicted upon it.

Concerned by the cruelty, local police officers responded swiftly to the scene.

They arrived to find the puppy in a distressed state, with visible bruising confirmed by veterinary examination.

Acting under powers granted by the Animal Welfare Act, officers located Thomas at his nearby residence on Bournemouth Road and seized the dog to ensure its safety and well-being.

Further investigations revealed the extent of the abuse through CCTV footage, which clearly showed Thomas repeatedly hitting the puppy on the head.

The footage provided crucial evidence linking him directly to the incident.

Following his arrest, Thomas was interviewed by authorities and subsequently charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and neglecting the needs of the animal in his care.

Initially, Thomas was scheduled to appear in court on April 16.

However, he failed to attend, prompting the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

The warrant was executed on April 25, and he appeared before Poole Magistrates’ Court the following day.

During the court proceedings, Thomas faced justice for his actions.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, which included the requirement to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work and participate in a 14-day rehabilitation program.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay over £1,300 in compensation to cover veterinary bills and costs incurred by animal rescue organizations.

The court also imposed a prohibition order under section 34 of the Animal Welfare Act, banning Thomas from owning or caring for any animals for a period of five years.

This order cannot be lifted for at least three years, ensuring he remains barred from animal ownership during this time.

Furthermore, a section 35 order was issued, allowing Dorset Police to take custody of the puppy and place it in the care of a suitable rescue organization.

Police Constable Hillier, the Dorset Police Dog Legislation Officer, praised the investigation team for their diligent work in identifying Thomas as the perpetrator.

He also expressed gratitude to the RSPCA for their guidance and to the local animal rescue charity that cared for the dog during the investigation.

The dog is now set to be adopted into a new, loving home where it can recover from its traumatic experience and live free from fear and suffering.
