MARIA WARREN FROM CAMBORNE SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL NEGLECT IN SQUALID CONDITIONS

Maria Jean Warren, born on 15 April 1966 and residing at Parc An Tansys, Tansys, Camborne TR14 7PH, was found guilty of severe animal neglect involving her dog and two cats. The case came to light after authorities discovered the animals living in deplorable conditions within her home. Warren was initially convicted in her absence during an earlier hearing but was later summoned back to court on a warrant for sentencing proceedings.

Among the animals rescued was a dog named Finlay, along with two cats, Midge and Smudge. The rescue operation was prompted by concerns raised over the animals’ welfare, which had been previously flagged by the RSPCA. On 3 May 2019, the RSPCA issued a warning notice to Warren, explicitly stating that her pets were not living in a suitable or humane environment. Despite this warning, Warren failed to comply with the advice given and subsequently denied access to her animals, raising serious concerns about their ongoing welfare.

Veterinary examinations revealed the extent of the neglect. Midge, one of the cats, was found to be significantly underweight, suffering from extensive fur loss, scabbing, and infestation with live fleas. The conditions of the animals’ health reflected the neglect they endured. On 7 June 2019, police executed a warrant at Warren’s residence, leading to the rescue of the two cats, Midge and Smudge, along with Finlay, the dog. The state of the property was described as chaotic and filthy, with the ground floor living room and kitchen in a particularly deplorable state.

RSPCA Inspector Paul Kempson provided a detailed account of the scene, describing the environment as extremely messy, with bags of general rubbish covering the floor to a depth of approximately two feet. The debris was also contaminated with what appeared to be cat and dog faeces scattered across various areas. The kitchen was in complete disarray, with rubbish strewn across the floor, work surfaces, and piled high in the sink with unwashed dishes. Hazards for the animals included empty food tins and other debris scattered throughout the property, creating a dangerous environment for the pets inside.

Inspector Kempson emphasized the importance of pet owners following professional advice or seeking help if they are struggling to care for their animals. The failure to do so, coupled with what was described as incompetent care, resulted in the animals being found in these horrific conditions. The court heard that Warren’s neglect was not deliberate but stemmed from well-meaning but ultimately inadequate attempts at caring for her pets.

In sentencing, Warren was ordered to pay a fine of £300. Additionally, she received a lifelong ban from keeping animals, with the possibility of appeal after three years. The case underscores the critical need for responsible pet ownership and the importance of seeking support when facing difficulties in caring for animals.
