CAMBORNE MAN MICHAEL WILLIAMS SENT NUDES TO UNDERCOVER COP POSE AS CHILD IN TRURO
In May 2022, a disturbing case unfolded involving Michael Williams, a 35-year-old resident of Camborne, who became the subject of a police sting operation after engaging in highly inappropriate online communications with an undercover officer posing as a young girl.Williams, who was formerly living at Pengover Parc in Redruth, was caught in a trap set by law enforcement on October 7, 2019. An undercover officer created a fictitious profile on Chatiw, a popular free online chatroom platform, under the guise of a 12-year-old girl. The profile was named ‘Want Tight,’ and it was designed to attract predators seeking to exploit minors.
Almost immediately after the profile was active, Williams initiated contact, sending a message that quickly turned sexual in nature. His messages to the fake profile included explicit questions about whether she had seen a penis before and expressed a desire to engage in both oral and penetrative sex with her. The officer, portraying the young girl, made several references to her age and her school activities, emphasizing her youth to Williams.
Throughout the exchange, Williams continued to sext, asking the fictitious girl about her clothing and requesting naked photographs. He insisted that their conversations remain secret, and the explicit dialogue persisted into the following day, October 8, 2019, on a different online platform. The prosecution detailed that Williams repeatedly requested oral and penetrative sex, and upon learning that the girl was a virgin, he claimed he would be gentle.
Despite multiple attempts to establish a video or audio connection, Williams’ calls went unanswered. The case against him was solidified when, on October 8, he sent the undercover officer a photograph of his erect penis, confirming his sexual intentions.
Williams was arrested on January 29, 2021, after police found two copies of the same indecent image of a child on his device. The evidence was overwhelming, yet Williams maintained that he had no sexual attraction to children. He claimed that his actions in October 2019 were influenced by alcohol and drugs, attempting to minimize his culpability.
In interviews conducted by Steve Butterworth from the probation service, Williams was observed to be in denial, showing a high risk of reoffending. Butterworth noted that Williams initially claimed he could not remember the incident and minimized his actions, despite clear discrepancies in his statements. He also pointed out Williams’ fixation on the physical aspect of genitalia and suggested that his intoxication was a disinhibitor rather than an excuse.
Judge Simon Carr, presiding over the case, was unpersuaded by Williams’ claims of remorse or lack of awareness. He sentenced Williams to eight months in prison, emphasizing the severity of his actions. The judge stated, “You made a profile and targeted that of the child knowing from the start she was 12 years of age. What the download shows is that you turned the conversation sexual almost immediately. That escalated over days including indications you want to have sex with her, and perform oral sex. You sent her a picture of your penis and tried to get her to send pictures of herself. Your desire was to get visual contact.”
Judge Carr further condemned Williams’ denial and minimization, highlighting that he showed no remorse or understanding of the potential harm caused to children. The court’s decision reflected the seriousness of the crime and the need to protect vulnerable minors from predatory behavior.
