LIAQAT ALI FROM STOCKTON FACES FINE AFTER FAILING TO REPORT MIDDLE EAST PILGRIMAGE
In a case that highlights the importance of adhering to legal restrictions for sex offenders, Liaqat Ali, a 33-year-old resident of Stockton, found himself in trouble for failing to notify authorities about his travel plans.Ali, who was previously convicted of exposure in 2011 and subsequently placed on the sex offenders register for a period of seven years, was subject to strict travel restrictions as part of his probation conditions.
On June 15 of this year, Ali embarked on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, a trip that was of significant personal and religious importance to him.
However, what should have been a straightforward journey turned into a legal issue when he did not inform the police of his departure from the country.
He remained abroad until July 11, returning to Stockton after nearly a month away.
During a hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, Ali admitted that he had failed to comply with the notification requirements.
Prosecutor Alan Davison explained that Ali did not carry the necessary documentation or inform the authorities about his travel plans, citing that Ali was “too excited” about his pilgrimage to remember to do so.
This oversight was later discovered when police became aware of his international travel, raising concerns about his compliance with the conditions of his sex offender registration.
Ali’s defense lawyer, Gary Wood, acknowledged his client’s breach, stating that Ali “fully accepts that he was in breach of the notification requirement.” He emphasized that the breach was not particularly serious and pointed out that there was no evidence of any other misconduct.
The lawyer also reassured the court that Ali’s actions did not suggest any malicious intent or further criminal activity.
As a result of his failure to notify, the magistrates imposed a fine of £120 on Ali, who resides on Yarm Lane in central Stockton.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay £120 in court costs.
The case underscores the ongoing responsibilities of sex offenders to comply with legal restrictions, especially when traveling abroad, and serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to such conditions to ensure community safety.
