LEWIS WALTON FROM CROOK SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN DURHAM AND DURHAM CROWN COURT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Crook, Durham, Lewis Walton, an 18-year-old man, has been sentenced to seven years in prison following his conviction for serious sexual offenses. The crimes, which took place over a span of two years, involved a young girl who was under the age of 16 at the time of the initial incident. The first incident occurred in March 2021 at a house party in Crook, where Walton, then just 16 years old, was present. During this gathering, he engaged in a heinous act of sexual assault against a girl who was also under 16. Witnesses at the party saw Walton laughing as he committed the assault, a detail that underscored the disturbing nature of his behavior. The court heard that Walton's actions were not isolated to this single event.
Two years later, Walton continued his predatory behavior by luring the same girl to a park in Durham, where he again engaged in sexual activity with her. During this second incident, Walton reportedly shouted at her, saying, “I knew I would get it out of you,” a remark that highlighted his callous attitude and lack of remorse. The victim, whose identity remains protected, has since suffered significant psychological trauma. She now experiences night terrors and has engaged in self-harm as a result of the emotional scars inflicted by Walton’s actions.
Prosecutor Jane Waugh detailed that the victim has sought psychological help to cope with her anxiety and difficulty being around others. The court was also informed that Walton, who had been drinking prior to the house party, later attempted to intimidate the victim by sending her threatening messages warning her not to speak out about what had happened. When questioned by police, Walton denied sending these messages, adding another layer of deception to his conduct.
Judge James Adkin, presiding over the case at Durham Crown Court, described Walton’s actions as occurring under “pretty unedifying circumstances” and condemned his behavior as degrading. Addressing Walton directly, the judge remarked, “It seems to me you just thought you could do what you wanted, when you wanted.” Walton, a resident of Crook in Durham, was found guilty of rape and sexual activity with a child after a four-day trial held last month.
In addition to his prison sentence, Walton was ordered to be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which will restrict his contact with the victim and monitor his behavior. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life and is subject to a restraining order that prevents him from approaching or contacting the victim. These measures are intended to protect the victim and prevent further harm, reflecting the severity of Walton’s crimes and the court’s response to them.
