LEVI HUDSON FROM RYDE HURT HIS BABY DAUGHTER WITH RIBS BROKEN IN SLEEP-DEPRIVED OUTBURST

Levi Hudson, a young man aged 20, faced the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday to answer charges related to a distressing incident involving his infant daughter. At the time of the event, Hudson was only 17 years old, and his daughter was just five weeks old. The court proceedings revealed that Hudson had admitted to inflicting grievous bodily harm on his vulnerable child, an act that has left a lasting impact on the family and community.

According to prosecutor Rose Burns, the troubling sequence of events unfolded on November 12, 2016. On that day, the mother of the baby took her to a paediatrician for a routine health check. During the examination, the doctor noticed signs of bruising around the infant’s shoulders, which prompted further investigation. A subsequent scan confirmed that two of the child's ribs had been fractured, raising serious concerns about the child's safety and well-being. The paediatrician promptly contacted social services, leading to interviews with both parents to understand the circumstances surrounding the injuries.

Levi Hudson explained to social workers that his daughter had been unusually restless and difficult to soothe. He described feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, which led him to hold her tightly in his arms as he cradled her. Hudson stated that he did not intend to cause any harm, but during the act, he heard two faint clicking sounds, which he later recognized as the breaking of her ribs. The court heard that Hudson was horrified by his own actions and, overwhelmed by guilt, he severed all contact with his daughter. He described himself as an 'awful person' in the aftermath of the incident.

Oscar Vincent, representing Hudson, characterized the event as a momentary loss of control stemming from fatigue and inexperience. He emphasized that the child had made a full recovery and that there was no lasting physical or mental damage. Vincent noted that Hudson was only 17 when his daughter was born and had been suffering from sleep deprivation for several nights leading up to the incident. He argued that this was a tragic mistake rather than malicious intent, and he expressed hope that Hudson could still be a capable father in the future.

However, the mother of the child, Lauren Danaher, expressed her deep anger and inability to forgive Hudson. Speaking after the hearing, she said, “I hate him for what he did to my daughter. She is okay now, but I will never get over it. For people in that court to say he was sleep-deprived, as if that’s an excuse, they should be ashamed. It’s not okay. What he did was not okay. He has not been properly punished for what he has done.”

Judge Ian Hughes acknowledged Hudson’s lack of malicious intent but emphasized that the harm caused was serious. He stated, “I accept you in no way meant to cause any harm to your daughter, and I will be sentencing you accordingly. This was a simple mistake you made, but you shouldn’t lose the chance to be a father. You had been doing your best.” As part of his sentence, Hudson was given an 18-month community order, which includes 25 days of rehabilitation to address underlying issues such as fatigue and parental preparedness.

Hudson, who resides on Longmead Road in Ryde, was visibly remorseful during the proceedings. The case has sparked discussions about the responsibilities and challenges faced by young, inexperienced parents, especially those dealing with sleep deprivation and emotional stress. The community and family members continue to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic incident, hoping for healing and better support for new parents in similar situations.
