THUG PULLED WOMAN’S HAIR WHEN SHE REFUSED TO HAVE SEX
Leighton Gronow, known as a talented rugby player and boxer from Barry, was convicted of strangling a woman after she told him she was heading out with friends. The incident also involved him kicking her thigh, which resulted in a bruise, as identified by prosecutor Alexander Orndal.
The 43-year-old, residing in Broughton Place, appeared before Cardiff Crown Court for sentencing procedures.
He admitted to one count of strangulation and two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.
It was revealed he has previous domestic violence convictions against his former partner, for which he served time earlier this year.
In a victim impact statement, she explained the severe effects on her life, stating: “This has had a huge impact.
I wake up sweating and find it hard to fall back asleep.
I’m always looking over my shoulder, worried he might attack me again.” She added: “I don’t feel safe in my own house and need the TV on to help me sleep.” Kirsten Murphy, representing Gronow, told the court that her client accepts the end of their relationship.
His lawyer said Gronow intends to focus on rebuilding his life and supporting his children after serving his sentence.
The judge, Eugene Egan, addressed Gronow directly, remarking: “You kicked your victim in the thigh causing her heavy bruising.
“You were jealous of her going out with her friends and you strangled her, causing bruising marks to her neck.” He added: “You then pulled her hair out when she refused to have sexual intercourse with you.
“These offences were a violation of the trust and security that should exist in an intimate or family relationship.” He received a six-month prison sentence, with the period already spent on remand credited towards this term.
Furthermore, a restraining order was issued to prevent contact with the victim, and he was ordered to pay a surcharge following his release.
