SALFORD MAN DETAINED AFTER FRENZIED MURDER OF MOTHER
Lee Hayes, aged 57 from Salford, has been convicted of the murder of his mother, Elsie Hayes, at their home on July 10, 2010.
Hayes, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility at Manchester Crown Court.
It was reported that he carried out the attack with a hammer and a knife in a frenzied assault.
During the court hearing, Hayes appeared via video link and revealed that he contacted police after the incident to admit to killing his mother and mutilating her corpse.
He stated that a voice from within his mind had spoken during the assault.
Following the attack, Hayes made an immediate suicide attempt and inflicted self-harm.
He is now being detained indefinitely at Ashworth Secure Hospital in Merseyside where he receives treatment and is kept under security measures.
