KILMANY O’CONNOR FROM MORECAMBE SENTENCED AFTER HORRIFIC DOG CRUELTY SCENE

Kilmany O’Connor, a woman from Morecambe in Lancashire, has been convicted and sentenced following a disturbing discovery of severe animal neglect at her residence.

Born around 1962, O’Connor, who was known to hoard and breed dogs, faced a series of serious charges under the Animal Welfare Act.

Her actions led to the rescue of 54 dogs, all of whom had been kept in deplorable conditions, and resulted in her being banned from keeping animals for life.

The investigation was initiated after concerns were raised about the welfare of the dogs at her home.

The RSPCA, in collaboration with police officers, conducted a raid on her property, revealing a scene of chaos and neglect that shocked even seasoned animal welfare inspectors.

Kilmany O’Connor pleaded guilty to five offences: four counts of causing unnecessary suffering to 36 of her 54 dogs, and one count of failing to meet the needs of all 54 animals.

Inspector Sam Morris of the RSPCA vividly described the scene upon entering her residence.

The first impression was of extreme clutter in the hallway, with household items strewn everywhere.

Three cages, stacked one on top of another, contained small dogs resembling cockerpoos or cocker spaniels.

These cages were in a filthy state, with the dogs’ fur badly matted and caked with faeces.

The cages measured approximately 50cm high, 44cm wide, and 60cm long, leaving the dogs with barely enough space to turn around, lie down, stretch out, or stand on their hind legs.

The confined animals had no means of escape.

The situation deteriorated further in the living room, which was both cluttered and filthy, with an overpowering ammonia smell.

The room was dimly lit, with curtains drawn and cobwebs covering the windows.

Inside, 13 dogs were confined in cages; two cages housed two dogs each, and one dog was tethered to a table leg.

Additionally, five dogs roamed freely within the room.

Two more dogs were kept caged in the kitchen, while two others were confined in the utility room.

An upstairs bedroom housed another 14 dogs in cages, in a humid environment.

Several of the dogs exhibited clear veterinary issues, and alarmingly, none of the animals had access to water.

All the dogs were surrendered at the scene and taken into the care of the RSPCA.

Among them, a dog named Mindy had lost one of her front paws due to neglect, and another dog, Fifi, who was tethered in the living room, had lost the use of her back legs but now moves around using wheels.

Despite the horrific conditions, all the dogs have since been re-homed and are now in loving environments.

In court, Kilmany O’Connor received a 16-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for two years.

She was also ordered to pay court costs and was given a lifetime ban on keeping animals.

The case garnered significant media attention, with coverage from the Lancashire Post, ITV News, and the Daily Mail, highlighting the severity of the neglect and the importance of animal welfare enforcement in the region.
