HUSBAND AND WIFE JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING CHILDREN
Kieron Lewis, aged 33, and Rebecca Bowey, aged 25, have been convicted of grooming minors for sexual purposes, as revealed during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.A victim described the two as "sick" and "frightening," with the judge calling them "cold and calculating." The court also noted their shared deviant interest.
Although originally from Sunderland, the couple, who later lived in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, admitted to multiple child sexual offences.
Lewis was sentenced to four years and ten months in prison, partly because he possessed more than 730 indecent images of children, while Bowey received a sentence of four years and one month.
Their misconduct was uncovered after the National Crime Agency flagged an IP address linked to Lewis, which was then handed over to Northumbria Police, explained prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw.
Evidence found on Lewis’s phone led officers to the victims, who had been too scared to report their abuse.
Authorities also discovered a large number of images 364 at the most serious category along with additional images in categories B and C.
Messages between the accused revealed discussions about abusing children, Wardlaw added.
One of the victims recounted feeling afraid to speak out and being convinced by Bowey that their secrets should stay hidden.
The victims described the offenders as "sick" and "frightening," and said the abuse caused them to develop a distorted view of sex, lacking consent and mutual respect.
The mother of another victim expressed her intense anger upon learning about the abuse and voiced her constant worries about her child's long-term emotional health.
Judge Peter Makepeace KC praised the victims’ courage in giving evidence, stating their testimonies will help prevent similar crimes.
He observed that Lewis and Bowey collaborated as a team to target children, with their communications being "chilling" and indicative of methodical planning.
He noted that the pair treated their victims as commodities, driven by a mutual, deviant sexual interest in children.
A psychiatrist testified that their bond provided a sense of validation that led to an escalation in their shared harmful behaviors.
Both suspects admitted to charges involving encouraging children to engage in sexual acts.
They are to remain on the sex offender register and follow lifelong sexual harm prevention orders.
