CONTROVERSY AS CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE FACES DEPORTATION HURDLES IN NOTTINGHAM
Kaspars Botters, aged 39, was convicted of abusing a girl under the age of 16 on five different occasions between 2009 and 2014.
He was arrested in Nottingham after Latvian authorities issued a conviction warrant.
His defence lawyer claimed there was a "high risk" that Botters would face "intimidation" and "extortion" if he were to be deported to Latvia, citing concerns about Latvia’s prison system and societal hierarchy, which involves inmates being placed into one of three castes with the lowest caste offering little protection.
The lawyer argued that extraditing Botters could breach his rights under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which forbids torture and inhuman or degrading treatment.
The district judge, John Zani, acknowledged Botters' "unsavoury past" and stated he needed more time to review the case, with a final decision scheduled for July 29.
