OFFICER FOUND GUILTY OF MISCONDUCT IN PUBLIC OFFICE
A police officer was convicted of misconduct in public office after engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a victim of domestic abuse.Kashif Saghir, who was serving as a response officer in Derby at the time, encountered the woman during his duties in September 2024.
He exchanged his personal mobile phone number with her, and they began communicating.
The following week, Saghir visited the woman’s home with a cake for her daughter’s birthday.
When the woman indicated that her daughter needed to go to bed, Saghir followed her upstairs into the child's bedroom, where he cuddled the girl, kissed her on the head, and read her a bedtime story.
Two days later, Saghir returned to her house and stayed into the evening.
As the woman grew increasingly worried about his conduct, she consulted her family, who advised her to report him to the police.
She did so, resulting in his arrest on October 13, 2024, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
After an investigation by Derbyshire Constabulary’s Professional Standards Department, Saghir was charged in late 2025.
He denied the charges and appeared in court for trial.
The trial commenced at Leicester Crown Court on 12 May, and on 22 May, the jury found him guilty.
On the same day, a 23-year-old man from Nottingham received a nine-month suspended sentence and a £2,000 fine.
