STOCKTON MAN KANE POVEY JAILED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE
A 'dangerous and predatory' Teesside man raped and sexually abused a primary school aged child.Kane Povey, 24, offered the child chocolate before carrying out a severe level of sexual abuse.
Teesside Crown Court heard the victim told their parents explicit details of the sexual abuse describing it as "disgusting." Povey, from Stockton, pleaded guilty to rape of child; and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
He has no previous convictions.
Povey, who has grown his hair long in prison and used it to cover his face during the hearing, listened via videolink from Holme House prison as the victim's mother said: "You are a sex offender through and through.
Because of what you did, my child has nightmares.
You've taken their innocence away.
They will have to live with what you did forever.
No prison sentence will be long enough." Povey's defence barrister Brian Russell told the court that his client "is a young man who's firmly planted his head in the sand".
He said: "He functions below his chronological age." Sentencing Povey, the judge told him: "It is clear to me that there are real limitations on your development and impulse control.
You have a sexual attraction to children." Povey was handed a 12-year extended sentence, made up of 11 years in prison and one-year on licence in the community.
A restraining order was put in place prohibiting Povey from contacting the victim and their family, ever again.
Povey was made the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and he will sign the sex offenders' register for the rest of his life.
He will never be able to work in a job that involves contact with children.
The victim's mother broke down in tears as Povey's sentence was read out.
After the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Allan from our POLIT (Paedophile Online Investigation Team), said: "Firstly I’d like to acknowledge the bravery of this young child for coming forward and having their voice heard and believed.
In doing so it allowed police to take immediate action to safeguard them and protect other children from Povey.
"Povey is a dangerous and predatory man who has caused this child untold struggles in their day-to-day life, but the child and their family have shown incredible bravery throughout the police and court process.
I hope today’s result will bring a degree of comfort to them all and I wish them all the best in going forward."
