JOSEPH SMITH
Joseph Smith, under the influence of drugs and searching for valuables, stole three packs of socks from Sports Direct and fled when security alarms sounded.
During his hurried escape around a blind corner into a back alley, he unexpectedly encountered Christine and Sidney Vasey, a couple of football fans.
The elderly couple, who had traveled from Doncaster to watch a Sunderland match, were in the city centre just before the game.
Smith forcibly pushed 68-year-old Mrs Vasey aside, which caused her to fall and hit her head on the pavement.
This resulted in serious head injuries from which she passed away a few days later.
The 37-year-old, residing in Halstead Square, Sunderland, was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter due to his actions.
