JOSEPH ROBINSON OF STOCKTON AVOIDS PRISON AFTER CHILD RAPE IMAGE CASE IN MIDDLESBROUGH
In March 2019, a high-achieving student from Stockton, Joseph Robinson, was spared prison despite admitting to offences involving child abuse images.Robinson, aged 19, was discovered to have accessed the dark web and viewed over 2,800 distressing images and videos depicting children in paedophilic acts, including rape and torture.
Police seized a computer tower and a memory stick from his home on October 11 the previous year, leading to his immediate confession.
The investigation uncovered a total of 2,598 indecent images, some illustrating pre-pubescent children, while others showed children experiencing sexual violence.
Court proceedings detailed that the images included more than three hours of videos at the most severe classification, depicting children suffering through abuse, which a court judge described as "particularly grotesque." Robinson, residing on Vicarage Avenue in Stockton, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing prohibited images.
The defence team highlighted Robinson's academic potential, noting he was a dedicated student on track for a first-class degree and intended to transition directly into a well-paid career in 2020.
They emphasized he had supportive references and a small, close-knit group of friends.
"An immediate custodial sentence would interrupt those studies and would have unknown consequences for his future career," stated his defence, adding that Robinson "needs help and will embrace it," believing he is at an age where his behaviour can still be modified.
Judge Howard Crowson addressed Robinson directly, saying, "Many people serve immediate prison sentences for these offences.
Unfortunately, we deal with many of these types of cases.
You have an unhealthy interest in indecent images of young children.
These are young people who have been abused.
Every time someone looks at their images, they violate them again.
To any right-thinking person, they are appalling." The judge also commented on the nature of the images, stating, "The people who bring references would be horrified if they knew the detail.
They are grotesque," and pointed out the severity of the prohibited images.
Robinson's cooperation with authorities suggested to the court that he would work with the Probation Service to prevent re-offending.
As a result, he received a one-year sentence at a young offenders' institution, suspended for two years.
The sentence includes participation in an internet sex offender treatment programme and a 30-day rehabilitation activity.
Furthermore, Robinson was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order restricting his internet and computer use, and he will be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
