JONATHAN MONTGOMERY SENTENCED IN YORKSHIRE FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES COMMITTED AS A TEENAGER
A man from Yorkshire, Jonathan Montgomery, has been sentenced to prison after a lengthy legal process that uncovered his past crimes involving two young victims.The case, which was heard at Bradford Crown Court, revealed that Montgomery, aged 44 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty by a jury of one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault.
These offences were committed when he was between 14 and 16 years old, during his teenage years in Yorkshire.
According to court proceedings, Montgomery’s offences took place over a period when he was a minor, and the victims, who are now adults, came forward to give evidence about the trauma they endured decades ago.
The court was presented with victim impact statements, one of which expressed the victim’s frustration and anger about having to relive her ordeal through the trial process.
She emphasized her feelings of betrayal and the difficulty she faced in speaking out at the time, fearing she would not be believed.
The other complainant also conveyed her inability to forgive Montgomery for his actions and his refusal to admit his guilt, which compounded her feelings of hurt and betrayal.
One of the victims described her emotional state, stating that she felt both anger and disgust during the period of the abuse.
She explained that her silence at the time was driven by fear and a lack of confidence that her claims would be taken seriously.
The court heard that these experiences have had a lasting impact on both women, affecting their mental health and well-being over the years.
During the trial, Montgomery’s defense lawyer, Barrister Paul Canfield, highlighted his client’s struggles with mental health issues and his efforts to seek help while in custody.
Mr.
Canfield also noted that Montgomery had battled a drug addiction for many years but had been sober for the past four months, indicating some level of rehabilitation.
Judge Recorder Palmer acknowledged the profound and lifelong effects that Montgomery’s actions had on the victims, as evidenced by their impact statements.
He emphasized that the severity of the psychological harm inflicted was a key factor in determining the sentence.
The judge also pointed out that Montgomery’s age at the time of the offences—just 14—warranted a reduction in the typical sentence for such crimes committed by adults.
Had Montgomery been an adult, the sentence could have been as long as ten years.
Ultimately, Recorder Palmer sentenced Montgomery to six years in prison: five years for the rape and indecent assault against one victim, and an additional year for the indecent assault against the second victim.
The court also ordered Montgomery to register as a sex offender indefinitely and imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offending.
