OXFORD CHRISTIAN CAMP LEADER ACCUSED OF DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE
The article reports that John Smyth, a Christian camp leader from Oxford, is accused of engaging in sexual abuse, coercive and controlling behaviors toward women and girls.Smyth, who died before facing justice, is alleged to have subjected as many as 130 boys and young men to traumatic attacks spanning five decades across the UK and Africa.
A review known as the Makin Review highlighted that Smyth's abusive behavior was evident over many years, with warnings sent to former leaders such as Revd David Fletcher, who participated in the review.
Fletcher, a former rector of St Ebbe’s in Oxford, acknowledged that he could tell Smyth was attracted to boys but claimed he could not remember receiving a warning postcard about Smyth in early 1981.
It was also reported that Smyth’s abuse was so extensive that it might have been prevented if church authorities had acted sooner.
The Church of England confirmed that after the review, information about sexual abuse and controlling conduct related to Fletcher was handed to the police.
The report also states that Smyth's misconduct was recorded as a crime, and authorities have urged anyone with further information to come forward and contact the safeguarding teams.
Smyth's actions and the church's failure to act promptly have led to public and institutional scrutiny and calls for accountability.
