MAN JAILED FOR CONTACTING EX WHO HE SET FIRE TO

A man was sentenced to prison for violating a restraining order by sending messages to his former partner, whom he previously assaulted and subjected to humiliating abuse involving fire and urination.

Jamie Terry, residing on Abingdon Road in Oxford, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday, December 2, where he received his sentence.

The 41-year-old admitted to two counts of breaching a restraining order and one count of failing to adhere to the conditions of the sex offender register.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Terry was returned to prison earlier in the year after he sent texts to his former partner.

He was released in October after serving time, but on October 18, he failed to inform authorities about his new address at a probation hotel in Oxford.

Prosecutor Kelly Purcell-Chandler told the court that Terry has a lengthy record of domestic violence against his ex-partner.

Further details indicated that in March, authorities found Terry with a mobile device containing private messages from two women, including his ex.

The prosecutor also stated that Terry had asked his ex-partner for financial assistance, and at one point, he texted her saying, “Phone me please babe,” to which she replied, “Will ring you after work.” Court records showed that in 2018, Terry was accused of setting the woman on fire and urinating on her bedding, instructing her to sleep on it.

Witnesses also reported that he stomped on her head.

The ex-partner confessed she kept their relationship secret out of fear of Terry’s violence.

In her victim impact statement, she expressed how difficult it was to write and revealed that Terry constantly attempts to contact her, claiming she is being watched and ignoring others’ warnings.

The court was informed that Terry has 12 convictions for 24 separate offences.

During the proceedings, Terry shouted from the dock, “It’s all in the past mate,” prompting the judge, Hassan Khan, to reply, “Don’t call me mate.” Prosecutor Purcell-Chandler emphasised that this was a calculated breach and that Terry has a history of ignoring court orders.

Gareth James, representing Terry, admitted that he was in contact with his ex, but argued she was responding to him, which he claimed was not an excuse.

Judge Khan highlighted that the ex-partner was extremely vulnerable and at high risk from Terry, noting her fear prevented her from revealing the abuse earlier.

Ultimately, Terry received a sentence of eight months in custody.
