JOHN HERKES FROM DOWNHILL, SUNDERLAND SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the local community and drawn widespread condemnation, John Herkes, a 71-year-old man from Downhill, Sunderland, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 11 years after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses spanning over three decades.The crimes, which include multiple instances of rape and indecent assault, were committed against young girls, some as young as three years old, and have left lasting scars on the victims.
Herkes's criminal activities came to light after one of his victims reported the abuse to the police, prompting a thorough investigation.
The court proceedings revealed that Herkes had systematically groomed his victims using sweets and money, tactics often employed by predators to gain the trust of their young targets.
The abuse took place between the years 1975 and 1990, a period during which Herkes exploited his position of trust and manipulated vulnerable children.
During the hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, it was disclosed that Herkes faced a total of 22 charges, which included six counts of rape, ten counts of indecent assault, and six counts of indecency with children.
Prosecutor Christopher Knox emphasized the profound and long-lasting psychological impact these crimes have had on the victims, noting that all the children involved were extremely young at the time of the assaults.
Herkes, who previously resided on Keith Square in Downhill, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to all charges.
His defense attorney, John Evans, acknowledged the gravity of the crimes, stating, “He knows that sorry can never be anything like enough and today he is not weeping for himself.
He knows he is going to be locked up and he knows he has to be locked up.” As the sentence was announced, members of the public gallery expressed their outrage by cheering, reflecting the community’s relief and desire for justice.
Judge Michael Cartlidge condemned the case as “truly dreadful,” highlighting Herkes’s systematic abuse of children aged between three and thirteen over a span of 15 years.
The judge also acknowledged Herkes’s early guilty plea, which was taken into account during sentencing.
In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a protective order preventing Herkes from having any contact with children under the age of 13 for the next ten years.
This measure aims to safeguard potential future victims and prevent any further harm.
Detectives from Sunderland, led by Detective Sergeant Chris Sybenga, expressed their satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing the rarity and severity of such cases.
Detective Sybenga stated, “Herkes was a serial paedophile who raped and sexually abused numerous female children who came into his contact.
In passing this lengthy sentence today, the court has acknowledged the horrific nature of his crimes and sought to protect the public from his future offending.
It is also hoped that this sentence will give the victims and their families some closure.”
