JOHN FINLAY SENTENCED IN GLENROTHES FOR DECADES-OLD CHILD SEX ABUSE CASE

John Finlay, a 65-year-old man with a dark history of sexual offenses, has been handed a prison sentence of 27 months following a court conviction related to multiple acts of child abuse spanning over a decade.

The crimes, which took place during the 1970s and 1980s, involved the sexual exploitation of young boys in the Fife village of Letham, where Finlay had long been a familiar face in the community.

Finlay’s position within the neighborhood was that of a trusted neighbor and babysitter, a role that allowed him to gain the confidence of local families.

His seemingly benign presence in the community masked a disturbing pattern of abuse that only came to light nearly 50 years later.

The revelation was triggered by a chance encounter between two victims, who, during a conversation in January 2021, shared their traumatic experiences.

This exchange prompted them to report Finlay to the police, setting in motion a lengthy investigation that ultimately led to his conviction.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Finlay had admitted to engaging in lewd and libidinous behavior towards a boy aged between four and six years old, during the period from October 1971 to October 1973.

Additionally, he confessed to abusing a second boy, who was a resident of his former home, between November 1978 and November 1980.

The court heard that Finlay had been entrusted with babysitting the second victim, a role that he exploited for his own gratification.

The second boy, however, eventually confided in his parents, expressing discomfort and dislike towards being left alone with Finlay.

This disclosure led to the abuse being reported to authorities many years later, highlighting how the victims’ silence was exploited and how the crimes remained hidden for decades.

Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith addressed the court, emphasizing the profound and lasting impact of Finlay’s actions.

He noted that the victims had suffered lifelong trauma, with one turning to drugs as a coping mechanism and another being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The court also ordered Finlay to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes.

Furthermore, Finlay was criticized for offering a meager £200 monthly pension payment as compensation, which the court described as 'derisory' and wholly inadequate considering the extensive and enduring harm inflicted.

The judge condemned this gesture, stating, 'The harm you caused inveigled every aspect of his life,' and highlighted the betrayal of trust that allowed Finlay to carry out his offenses under the guise of community respectability.

This case serves as a stark reminder of how predators like Finlay can exploit their trusted positions within small communities such as Glenrothes and Letham to commit serious sexual offenses, often silencing victims and prolonging their suffering for decades.
