FIFE SERIAL RAPIST DIES IN PRISON BEFORE SENTENCING
John Ferrier, a serial rapist from Fife, passed away while still in prison just one day before he was scheduled to be sentenced.Ferrier had been convicted of seven counts of rape, along with charges of assault and threatening behavior.
Despite denial of the charges, the court found him guilty of these serious offenses.
He was informed that he was likely to face a lengthy prison sentence, including the possibility of a life sentence.
A risk assessment was ordered by a judge at Edinburgh High Court during April, which could lead to a lifelong restriction order.
Ferrier was due to hear his fate in Glasgow on Wednesday, but he died in HMP Perth.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson confirmed Ferrier's death on November 7, 2023, and noted that police and the Procurator Fiscal had been informed, with a Fatal Accident Inquiry to follow.
He had formerly lived in Warwick Close, Leuchars, and during his trial, it was revealed that he had denied the charges.
The prosecution detailed his brutal crimes, including forcing a woman to watch videos depicting extreme violence and abuse, with two women suffering miscarriages because of his brutality.
Ferrier had used weapons like golf clubs and baseball bats to intimidate his victims, and he inflicted serious violence, including throttling women.
The presiding judge, Lord Beckett, described his acts as involving "serious and persistent violence" and expressed concern over his propensity to commit sexual offenses, suggesting he could have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
