JOHN DONOVAN BRIDGEND NURSE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGE GIRL AT SWANSEA'S SINGLETON HOSPITAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bridgend and the wider Swansea area, John Donovan, a 38-year-old nurse from Brackla, Bridgend, was convicted of heinous sexual misconduct involving a teenage girl. The incident took place while Donovan was employed at Swansea's Singleton Hospital, where he exploited his position of trust to carry out a series of predatory acts under the guise of providing sex education.According to court proceedings, Donovan lured the young girl into a private lesson by offering to show her explicit images he had downloaded from the internet. The court heard that Donovan, during this illicit session, displayed a video depicting a woman touching herself before engaging in sexual intercourse with her partner. He then proceeded to ask the girl if she knew how to 'turn herself on,' effectively initiating a disturbing and inappropriate lesson.
Prosecutor Geraint Walters detailed that Donovan’s collection of internet videos included various women engaging in sexual acts in different positions, which he used as part of his manipulative approach. The court was told that the lesson culminated in Donovan physically assaulting the girl by touching and licking her breasts and genitals. The assault escalated to the point where Donovan engaged in sexual intercourse with her, all while seated in a leather chair and seemingly admiring the explicit images on his computer screen.
Donovan, who was living in Swansea at the time and is now divorced, denied the charges, claiming that the incident never occurred. However, the jury unanimously found him guilty after deliberation. The conviction led to a mandatory order from Judge Christopher Morton, who informed Donovan that he would be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
During the sentencing, Judge Morton emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating, “You have lost a great deal by this conviction.” The court’s decision reflects the serious nature of the offense and the breach of trust involved.
Following the verdict, Singleton Hospital’s general manager, Janet Williams, issued a statement clarifying the hospital’s stance. She affirmed that the incident was entirely unrelated to the hospital’s operations, stating, “The conviction has absolutely nothing to do with the hospital. Mr Donovan is no longer employed with the NHS trust. He was suspended after the allegation was made and he has since been dismissed.”
