MAN SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN PRISON FOR SIX DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENCES
A man has received a custodial sentence after engaging in a pattern of controlling conduct and abusive behavior towards a woman from 2018 to 2024.Jamie McGrath, born on 09/12/2002 and residing on Lowland Road in Woodsmoor, Stockport, was sentenced at Minshull Crown Court to three years in prison on multiple charges connected to domestic abuse.
Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite restraining order.
The victim came forward in November 2024, courageously revealing that McGrath often became aggressive and violent during disagreements, physically injuring her on several occasions.
She described incidents including being punched in the face, being thrown down stairs, having her fingers broken after being grabbed, her head forced into a full bathtub restricting her breathing, and his throwing tools at her, which caused noticeable bruising.
Moreover, McGrath demonstrated controlling tendencies by locking her inside their flat when she was not ready on time or as a form of punishment for social outings with friends.
The police arrested him immediately following her report.
In May 2025, he was convicted of controlling and coercive behavior, assault, criminal damage, theft of her phone, and two counts of false imprisonment.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim delivered a statement describing the enduring effects of the abuse.
She expressed ongoing struggles with her mental and physical health and shared the heartbreak of having to relinquish custody of her daughter to shield her from McGrath.
She continues to seek support to rebuild her life.
Her statement included: “I would say I’m happier since I have felt safer without the risk of you appearing, I’m not healed or the perfect stable person, but I am happier.
“I still panic, I still cry, and I still think about all the physical and mental pain you inflicted on me every day.
I still check my phone, I still expect you to walk in the house or worry if you're following me or know what I’m doing, but I’m getting better with the right support from family and friends and professionals.
“With this support I’m learning how much you broke me down and I’m slowly building myself back up.
“All I can hope is that, with justice and speaking out, I’ve saved another person from being abused at the hands of you.”
