MAN JAILED INDECENT ASSAULT AND ATTEMPTED RAPE FROM 34 YEARS AGO
A man was sentenced to 13 years in prison after Greater Manchester Police’s Cold Case team linked him to an assault and attempted rape involving a 74-year-old woman in Stockport from over 30 years ago.The conviction came after a renewed investigation into the cold case, aided by advancements in forensic technology which allowed investigators to reexamine evidence from 1992.
Aron Traynor, 56, of London Road, Stockport, was convicted at Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday, May 8, 2026, for attacking a woman in 1992 in a violent indecent assault and attempted rape.
The woman, who has since died, was assaulted by an unknown individual while walking near her residence.
Despite detailed forensic efforts at that time, no suspect was identified.
The case was under continuous review.
In 2005, the Cold Case Unit obtained additional forensic data, creating a near-complete DNA profile that was added to the National DNA Database, but no matches were found then.
A significant development occurred when a DNA sample taken from Traynor, following an unrelated drunk-driving arrest in August 2023, matched the cold case profile, leading to justice for the victim’s relatives.
The match was officially confirmed in October 2023, prompting Traynor's arrest shortly afterward.
He was convicted after a five-day trial in March 2026, where the jury found him guilty on both charges.
