A man found guilty of domestic abuse, who subjected a woman in Surrey to threats, surveillance and control, has been sentenced to prison along with a decade-long restraining order.
Benjamin Carlin, aged 43 and from Stockport, repeatedly sought ongoing contact with the victim, responded with abuse when she did not reply, and made threats to kill her and her family members.
He also threatened to take his own life if she ended their relationship.
The victim contacted Surrey Police in August 2025 under the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, commonly known as Clare’s Law, which allows officers to inform individuals about a partner’s prior history of domestic violence or abuse, helping them assess their safety.
She reported experiencing a pattern of coercive and controlling actions that left her too scared to leave the relationship.
On August 13, during a police interview, she received more than ten calls from Carlin in a short span, during which he demanded her whereabouts and accused her of dishonesty.
He also threatened to come to Surrey to strangle her.
Carlin was detained by West Midlands Police, charged, and entered a guilty plea at the start of his trial.
On March 17, at Croydon Crown Court, he was sentenced to two years and one month in prison and was issued a 10-year restraining order.
