COERCIVE CONTROLLER SENTENCED

A woman who fell victim to coercive control demonstrated remarkable courage by reporting her abusive former partner, leading to legal proceedings against him.

Daisy Martin was the one who reported Callum Coady’s pattern of controlling behavior after enduring more than a year of ongoing abuse.

Her account included details of location tracking, emotional manipulation, and an assault that occurred at Manchester Airport in August 2023.

Coady (born 22 February 1999), residing on Larwood Avenue in Heaton Mersey, Stockport, admitted to charges of coercive control.

He received a sentence of 16 weeks in prison, suspended for a year, at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on March 16, 2026.

He was also issued a five-year restraining order, mandated to cooperate with probation services concerning future relationships, and ordered to pay £200 in victim compensation.

During the relationship, Coady’s behavior grew increasingly aggressive and controlling.

He compelled Daisy to delete her social media, monitored her online activities, dictated her clothing choices, and limited her contact with friends and family.

Daisy received assistance from specialist officers of the Stockport Domestic Abuse Team, who investigated and examined over 35,000 messages exchanged between the pair.

In her victim impact statement, Daisy said: “After everything I went through, it has had a profound impact on my life.

I struggle daily to understand people and often overthink even small interactions.

“I question whether people will treat me with respect after trusting someone who changed completely once, I let him close and controlled how I behaved, thought and lived.

“What happened has made me extremely wary of relationships and friendships.

He made me forget what love should feel like, and I struggle to believe anyone could genuinely want something healthy with me.

“I feel anxious going places in case I see him, and I still look over my shoulder.

My sense of safety is gone.

“He made me feel unlovable and affected my self-confidence.

I overthink everything and notice changes in myself - getting angry more easily and snapping.

I’m trying to rebuild myself.

“I blamed myself for not seeing the manipulation sooner.

“Now small things trigger doubt, and if someone seems distant, I assume I’ve done something wrong.

“I used to be open and secure, but that part of me feels damaged.

This experience has deeply affected my trust and identity.” On August 19, 2023, at Manchester Airport, Coady’s aggression surfaced after he saw a message on Facebook.

CCTV footage showed him shouting at Daisy, throwing a glass of prosecco at her, and making threats to kill her.

Airport staff intervened, and he was detained on the aircraft.

During police interviews, Daisy disclosed the ongoing abuse and presented messages from Coady.

Officers explained that her description indicated coercive and controlling conduct, which she initially did not fully recognize.

Feeling trapped and hopeless, Daisy believed she could see no escape.

Coady was subsequently arrested in connection with these offences.

The domestic abuse team carried out a comprehensive investigation, scrutinizing more than 35,000 messages that exposed a consistent pattern of control, threats, and manipulation.

The detailed digital evidence played a central role in revealing the severity of the abuse Daisy endured.
