SCOTTISH RAPE VICTIM SEEKS JUSTICE AFTER NEARLY 7 YEARS
A woman has come forward to share her account of alleged abuse at the hands of James Chynoweth, describing how her life was changed forever on the night of 3 February 2019.She says that evening she was raped and sexually abused by Chynoweth after months of physical, sexual and verbal assaults that left her feeling trapped, silenced and controlled.
According to her, the abuse escalated over time, with an incident on 8 March 2019 when he allegedly twisted her arm behind her back and sprained her wrist.
The survivor says she went to the police and, at first, believed justice might be done.
However, on 14 August 2019 she was told that no action would be taken against Chynoweth.
She alleges that his mother, Nikki Chynoweth, gave him a false alibi by booking him onto her holiday, while her own mother had seen him walking her home the night of the alleged rape.
Out of fear, she says, she stayed silent at the time and this silence was used against her when it came to securing a prosecution.
Years later, she was contacted again because a new case had emerged in Scotland, this time involving another young woman who had her own account of abuse by Chynoweth.
The survivor says discovering that she was not the only one was devastating but also validating.
She describes how seeing him face accountability in that Scottish case gave her a sense of partial justice, even if it was not for her own allegations.
She said that the courage of the other survivor brought her some closure and reminded her that what had happened to her was real, wrong and could not be erased.
It has now been more than six years since that night, and the woman says the pain, trauma and injustice still remain.
However, she emphasises that she is still standing and that telling her story is part of reclaiming the voice she says James Chynoweth tried to take from her.
She believes those who enabled or protected him also bear responsibility for what happened.
The survivor ended her account with a message for others who may have gone through similar experiences.
She said their voices matter, their stories matter, and they deserve justice.
This is her story in her own words and perspective.
At the time of her report in 2019, police took no further action and no conviction was secured in relation to her case.
James Chynoweth has been named in connection with a later Scottish case, though details of those proceedings are not set out here.
He and his family have the right to respond to these allegations, and he remains innocent in law unless proven guilty in a court.
